La Mafia's Return to Angleton , TX

Quartermoon, that was one helluva party you threw in Angleton last Saturday. Oh man, what a crowd, TEJANOS of all ages, from all over Brazoria County , many from H-town and some from even further away were on hand to witness an absolutely amazing performance by La Mafia!

I got there real early, like at 7:00 when the doors opened and there were already people in there, and man was I hungry , glad they had some fajitas, they were very good BTW. It was fun to watch all the people dancing to the DJ music, when I say all ages, I ain't kidding. People brought their kids, and there were teens , twenty-somethings through sixty-somethings all out there dancing. The place was really filling up when the opening band , Festivo, came on and oh man did they ever keep the dance floor packed.

I was sitting at a table over to the side of the dance floor with my friend, Diana (who had come from H-town with her adorable little girl). We were keeping an eye on the crowd to see when it was time to "make our move". People were still dancing as La Mafia's crew was setting up , but I could see people eyeing each other , a couple of girls eased their way to the right side of the stage, and some other people on the left were getting restless, and when the people who were dancing started slowing down as they got close to the stage, I told her, "I think it's time ", so we made a mad dash to the front , right b4 Jim came on to announce LA MAFIA! That's when everyone else stampeded to the front. Diana looked at me and said "wow, we timed it JUST RIGHT"

Jim had told me that La Mafia was going to do two sets, but I had a feeling (cause I've seen em do it before) that they would NOT take a break, that they would give us two straight hours of hit after hit, and they gave us EVEN more than 2 hours.

I can't even begin to name all the songs they played. Of course when it's a PURO TEJANO crowd you KNOW they're going to do some "Old School", and man did they ever, after Oscar teased the crowd by asking them which 80s songs they wanted to hear, and promising to do them "a little later", he started out singing (a cappella ) "Yo soy feliz feliz feliz y mucho muy feliz.... , then the band joined in on the song ("Mi Loca Pasion" ) and the crowd went absolutely beserk as La Mafia went through several 80s songs in a row. Gritos were coming from all over the hall, and I swear I've never heard so many women throwing gritos in my life .

Those of you who like to believe that Tejano Fans only get worked up by La Mafia's 80s songs THINK AGAIN, the same people who had been screaming wildly and singing along during the 80s jam, continued to do the same through ALL the songs including "Quiero Amanacer Contigo" from their current ( Latin Grammy Award Winning CD). People were shouting out songs they wanted to hear, and the guys did their best to oblige , bombarding us with hit after hit after hit. Oh man oh man, Oscar poured every ounce of his being into "Si Quiere Dios" and the crowd became so emotional that I could tell Oscar was affected by their reaction.

As they closed the show the screams of "Otra Otra Otra" were deafening, and Oscar comes back over to the mic with that teasing grin of his and asks "Quieren Otra?" (DUH!) For the encore they treated us to THE song that EVERYONE had been asking for, "Me Estoy Enamorando" and I can't EVEN begin to describe the reaction. There was a girl (from Brownsville) standing beside me , who had gotten separated from her boyfriend, BUT during that song he somehow managed to fight his way up to the front and just laid one on her. Now I'm not real big on public displays of affection, but hey , that's the effect that song has on people, and it really was quite touching. I'm telling you everyone in the place was in a total state of euphoria.

The guys were signing autographs and posing for pix with people after the show , there was such a mob of people around them that I couldn't even see them, so I headed out , figuring that I'd just drive until I got tired and stop at a motel somewhere along the way, but I was on such a high that I was in Dallas before I knew it.
